Charity Gets Lift From Mens Kiteflying Fundraiser 2009: Youre Looking

Charity gets lift from mens kiteflying fundraiser

If you’re looking for something to do on Saturday, Peter Werle and Craig McCue have a suggestion: Go fly a kite.
Literally. The goal is to have more than 200 kites in the air throughout the afternoon and to raise $2,000 for the Rainbow Fund, which local Department of Human Services’ workers use to help children in foster care. Last year’s event sold more than 120 kites and raised about $700 for Harbor for Youth and Wings, which provides counseling and shelter services for runaway and homeless youths. Werle said the goal is to make Kites for a Kause an annual event, benefiting a different charity each year. “We’re sort of targeting the local smaller charities that don’t get those big events going where they can raise a lot of money,” Werle said. “We’re starting off kind of slow and trying to gain momentum.” As for McCue, he’s always looking for an excuse to fly a kite. On Thursday afternoon, he took the raffle’s grand prize — the kite with the 131 foot long tail — out for a spin to help generate interest in Kites for a Kause.
The forecast for Saturday is near perfect for kite flying — wind ranging from 5 to 10 mph — and McCue will be on hand to give beginners some tips.
