COLUMN New sporting goods company sets up in Gateway

In a few weeks, Calgary-based retailer Wholesale Sports Outdoor Outfitters will be taking up residence in the building left behind when Future Shop moved
west. Six months ago, Future Shop moved from its 100 Avenue location to new digs at the Grande Prairie Power Centre across the street from Costco. Now Wholesale Sports will set up shop there and renovations of the 18,000 square foot store are near completion. The retailer said everything is on track for a mid-to-late May grand opening. “I think that we’ve been looking at a lot of opportunities and Grande Prairie just seemed to be one that would work well with the demographic that we hit, which is the outdoor sporting market,†controller Lucie Knight said. Wholesale Sports currently has seven locations in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. They specialize in outdoor sporting goods for hunting, fishing, and camping. Given the fact that outdoor activities are popular year-round in Grande Prairie, Knight said the company has no issues or fears of opening a new store in the current economic climate. “No,†she said when asked if the recession had them wavering on opening a new store in Grande Prairie. “We have confidence in what we do, and we think we deliver a great product.â€
