FORGET galleries &ndash art will be on display in shops, pubs and even a chip shop for a new community event in Nottingham.
Sherwood Art Week will link in with Sherwood Festival, and more than 60 local artists have volunteered to display their art. The week will launch with an Open Air Craft Fair, which aims to recreate a village fete in the Robin Hood pub car park. More than 70 premises will become mini art galleries as part of the ‘Art-in-Shops’ idea. The businesses involved include hairdressers, takeaways, cafes, a butcher’s shop, charity shops, estate agents, and even a funeral directors. “We didn’t realise at the beginning quite how many artists there were in the area, and the artists themselves didn’t realise,” said Sue Staples, who is organising the festival with Jane Gill. “It’s brilliant that so many creative people live here.” All the artists and organisers are giving their time for free, and the venues are not charging for the use of their space.
Artists exhibiting include Sherwood Rise satirist Lord Biro, who is known for his comical sketches and illustrated poetry, and Alison Knox from Woodthorpe, who produces artwork inspired by angels.
