After the big earthquake last September 2013, super typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) battered the Visayas Region of the Philippines. This is by far the strongest storm ever recorded in the history of Philippine typhoons. Charity from Springfield, Missouri, Convoy of Hope together with theirConvoy of Hope’s Global Disaster Response Team extended their help and shipped containers full of food and supplies on the way to the Philippines including canned goods, hygiene kits and water filtration units.

Convoy of Hope holds up to 50 community outreaches in United States every year and this time, they are extending their support to the Philippines. Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) is being compared to a very strong Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of up to 195 miles per hour. For reference, Hurricane Katrina reached sustained winds of 175 miles per hour.

Food and supplies are on hand at our distribution center in Manila, says Kary Kingsland, executive vice president of Global Initiatives for Convoy of Hope. We are ready to send them out where needed. The people of the Philippines need our prayers but will also need our help. Convoy of Hope will also distributing food, water filters, shoes and other supplies to survivors.
