General Stanley McChrystal, the former US commander in Afghanistan and also head of US Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), will address the Los Angeles World Affairs Council on May 15th. McChrystal, who now runs a business consulting firm based in Alexandria, VA, will talk about the lessons learned from his 34 years in the military, and how they can be applied to leadership in the civilian world.McChrystal, who was called one of Americas greatest warriors by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, was in charge of JSOC, which includes the Navys Seal Team 6 and the Armys Delta Force, from 2003 to 2008. During that time JSOC forces captured Saddam Hussein in Iraq in 2003, and were responsible for the killing of the al Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarkawi, in 2006. He subsequently commanded NATO operations in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010. After retiring from the military, he co-founded the McChrystal Group, which seeks to adapt best practices from Special Operations to improve efficiency in business organizations.He is a senior fellow at Yale Universitys Jackson Institute for Global Affairs, where he teaches a course on Leadership in Operation. He is also the Chairman of the Aspen Institutes Franklin Project, dedicated to promoting national service initiatives among American youth. He is the author of a memoir,My Share of the Task, which was published in January 2013.General McChrystal resides in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife of 36 years, Annie.
