The aim of this campaign is to rescue girls from forced marriages and boys from forced labour and take them back to school.
We are very concerned about the spate of child marriages in our country, particularly in the rural areas. Instead of being sent to school, girls sometimes as young as 14 years old are forced into marriages in exchange of cash or material things such as cattle. This is tantamount to modern day slavery! Boys are equally not spared the brunt as they made to perform menial tasks such as herding cattle or doing farm work which must ordinarily be left to elderly folks.
In view of this, we have resolved to embark on a get the child back to school campaign. We hope to cover a distance of 1097 km on foot from the mining town of Solwezi to the tourist city of Livingstone.
.This activity shall run from April to mid June 2015 and a police permit has already been secured.
During the campaign, we intend to venture into every village and township and hold roadshows to highlight the effects of early marriages and child labour. This will be done through drama, music and poetry. While well be encouraging parents/guardians to consider sending their children to school to school, we also hope to ensure that children become aware of their fundamental human rights.
