The Royal Canadian Golf Association announced Wednesday that the CN Canadian Women’s Open will be played next year at St. Charles Country Club, Aug. 26-29. That makes the CN Canadian Women’s Open the third-richest event on the LPGA Tour this year. And it isn’t just the players who will be winners — among them champion Katherine Hull, Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer, Suzann Petersen, Se Ri Pak, Michelle Wie, Cristie Kerr, Karrie Webb, Julie Inkster, Morgan Pressel, Natalie Gulbis, Brittany Lincicome and Canadian star Lorie Kane who competed last year in Ottawa. In 2008, when record-setting crowds exceeded 68,000 at Ottawa Hunt, the event raised $1 million for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Foundation. CN’s commitment to match funds raised in advance of and during tournament week effectively doubled the $500,000 generated locally and then CN upped the ante by donating a further $100,000 to the Annika Sorenstam foundation to honour the contributions of the retired superstar. “We have had a terrific run here, built a wonderful tournament and managed to raise millions of dollars for children across Canada,” CN senior vice-president Stan Jabolinski said in Wednesday’s teleconference to announce the St. Charles tournament. “These are difficult times and it will be a corporate board decision. We’ll be doing a lot of evaluating and there are a lot of decisions to make, but we’ve had a lot of positive feedback.”
RCGA executive director Scott Simmons and Open tournament director Sean Van Kesteren said Wednesday it’s their intention to see the 2010 championship played on St. Charles’ MacKenzie and Ross nines.
