Golf McCoy will keep trying to reach elusive US Open

BY RICK BROWN • May 17, 2009 Mike McCoy doesn’t remember how many times he’s tried to qualify for the U.S.
Open. “I would say at least 20,” said McCoy, 46, a West Des Moines insurance executive. His first attempt came in 1981, as a senior at West Des Moines Dowling. He’ll make another attempt today when he competes in the 18-hole U.S. Open local qualifier at Harvester Golf Club in Rhodes. Sixty-one players will be competing for four spots and two alternate spots to sectional qualifying in early June, the last step to the Open.
“Playing in the Open would certainly be nice, no question,” McCoy said. “It’s very hard to do. But if I played well it could happen.” McCoy isn’t a dreamer chasing clouds. He’s ranked fifth in the United States and 16th in the world among amateur golfers by Golfweek, which is higher than any Iowan ever. He’s made it to the U.S. Amateur 11 times &mdash last year he got there through a qualifier at Harvester, shooting a competitive course-record 66 in the first round &mdash as well as numerous U.S. Mid-Amateurs. He made it to the semifinals last year.
