WARREN – Martha Hill walked and talked the Bible.
Family and friends say the 63-year-old also loved her community, was inspired by the Lord to help her family and neighbors and, before she passed away last year, even spearheaded an organization to do it. Above all else, she also liked to feed people. ”She just loved to feed them in general in the neighborhood, and she just branched out to the community,” said her son Marvin Hill, who is now vice-president of her Love Charity Alms organization. ”She would do so much for others. That’s what we try to do for the community in any way we can.” For the third year, several members of Hill’s family welcomed hundreds of other relatives and community members into her old backyard at 721 Baker St. S.W. – where some of her family still lives – for the organization’s annual Memorial Day Picnic. Nearly 200 attended for the food, music and fellowship, during the event hosted for the community each year. Hill said Love Charity Alms was formed by his mother in 2005 in part to bring together the community and help people during crisis situations. ”It’s a blessing to help others,” said Hill. ”She would do so much for others. That’s what we try to do for the community any way we can.”
Other than the Memorial Day picnic, the group also hosts a Christmas dinner, where several Trumbull County children are given dinner and gifts. It also gives three $200 to $300 Martha J. Hill Scholarship awards to high school students who embody superb academic performance and show compassion to others through their service.
