SUPERIOR – It was a record-breaking weekend at the Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival, an annual fund raising event that brings in thousands of
spectators and paddlers for a day of racing off Barker’s Island. There was a whole lot of paddling going on at the island Saturday. It was race day in Superior Bay off Barker’s Island. “It’s a blast. I don’t know how to explain it it’s awesome!” said Julie Le Blanc. Le Blanc is the team captain of “Women of the Woods,” one of only a few all-women teams. “It’s just a great getaway for women, all of us women are working women, we all bust our butts, work really hard and it’s a great escape,” said Le Blanc. “It’s fun, really fun. We are pumped,” said Kara Davidson. Davidson is the drummer for team “Crude Intentions.” “It’s a lot of hard work, even the drummer, you have to scream. Let’s go Crude Intentions!” she yelled.
Teams of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer raced their way to finish line, 500 meters away.
