May 22, 2009 The children of Chula Vista Learning Community Charter School (CVLCC) belong to the O Ambassadors, a nationwide organization founded by Oprah
Winfrey to teach young people to become active, compassionate and knowledgeable global citizens. CVLCC’s chapter is known as The One Love Club. Their second annual event, called the Super Big Give Charity Festival, will be held Friday, May 29 from 3-6 p.m. on the school campus at 590 K St. in Chula Vista. The event promises many activities for all ages including live music, carnival games, beauty spa and silent auction. And, club members promise there will be great food to buy. All proceeds will be sent, via O Ambassadors, to help construct schools in the village of Domeabra, located on the Ashanti coast of Ghana, Africa. Last year’s event raised more than $6,000, and students are setting a goal of $7,000 for the second annual event. The village of Domeabra has already benefited from a primary school constructed with funds from O Ambassadors around the U.S. and Canada. Now being built is a secondary facility for 160 teens ages 14-18 in four classrooms. Desks, chairs, blackboards and textbooks will be purchased, which has the youth of the village very excited.
O Ambassadors learn that education is the pathway to a better life no matter where you live in the world. In Ghana, 46% of the population is illiterate, while only 54% of primary school-aged children attend schools. Fully 40% of the population lives below the poverty line.
