Column by Mike Tankersley • May 5, 2009 I was a little amused to hear last week that former Mi ami Hurricanes quarterback Gino
Torretta had been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. Not that one game should ruin a man’s career, but anyone who watched Torretta struggle against Alabama’s defense in the 1992 Sugar Bowl has to have some misgivings about this honor, especially when you consider that someone like Kenny Stabler is not in the College Hall. But there are no misgivings about this: Brent Krause of Wynlakes is absolutely deserving of the honor he’s poised to accept tonight at Port St. Lucie, Fla. Krause heads a class of eight individuals who will be inducted into the PGA Golf Professional Hall of Fame during the PGA of America’s spring meeting. It’s the exclamation point on a stellar career that shows no sign of slowing down. “It’s exciting. It’s pretty cool,” Krause said Monday evening after landing in south Florida. “At the same time, I feel kind of funny because my whole life, I’ve stressed doing things as part of a team. I don’t like talking about ‘I’ or ‘me.’ “So, that’s what I’m going to stress in my speech, being a part of this eight-man Hall of Fame class and what everyone has accomplished.” Krause, whose passion for many years has been the development and support of local junior golfers, has had many honors come his way over the years. He is a two-time PGA of America National Award recipient, and he received the PGA Horton Smith Award in 2002.
But it must be more than achievements that prompted groups of friends from both Montgomery and Anniston — Krause’s former stomping grounds — to travel to Florida to see Krause get his just due.
