Jan Carinci knows what magic moments and special happenings in sports and life are all about.
Carinci is a former slotback who played 10 seasons in the Canadian Football League, mainly for the Toronto Argonauts. His greatest moment came in 1983 when the Argos won the Grey Cup. These days, Carinci lives in Moncton and he’s totally thrilled with a different kind of team success. He’s playing a major role with the organizing team of the annual Peter Gzowski Invitational golf tournament. “We’re No. 1 in Canada. .have been for four straight years and this will be the fifth,” Carinci says of the PGI event, scheduled for the Royal Oaks Estates & Golf Club today. Actually, the PGI Moncton, which has surpassed $1 million in charity fundraising, is two fun-filled days of activities. It began yesterday morning with a family festival for literacy that included hair braiding, face painting, literacy contest winner readings, poet laureate Sheree Fitch, and singing and dancing performances by New Brunswick youth groups. “Golf is the catch word, but the PGI is so much more than golf,” offers Carinci.
“To be here at the City Market this morning and see the hundreds of day-care kids all dressed in green and yellow, having fun and learning about reading and being encouraged to read. It’s simply a fantastic happening.”
