Publication The Southampton Press

Before announcing all of the events taking place this coming week, congratulations are in order first for the winners of the Friends of the
Westhampton Library’s annual poetry contest. The contest was open to all students of the Westhampton Beach School District, and 61 entries were received. Those earning top honors were: Jimmy Morgan who penned “Galileo’s Machine” Liana Fitt who wrote “Illegible Stars” Ashlyn Burbano who penned “My Hero Pegasus” and Jackson Parli for the poem “Galileo Who Helped Change Minds.” Congratulations! As far as events go, there are plenty taking place over the next week. Let’s get to them. The 14th annual East End Garden Festival, the proceeds from which will benefit the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, will begin today, Thursday, May 7, and run through Sunday, May 10, which just so happens to be Mother’s Day. This year, the sale will be held at the same time at two different locations: in the parking lot of the Suffolk Life building in Riverhead and right here on the Great Lawn in Westhampton Beach. Both locations will be open for business between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., rain or shine, each day. Vendors will be selling a variety of annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, shrubs and trees. This is always a great sale and those who stop by will certainly find some beautiful blooming gifts for Mother’s Day. For more information, call 548-6080. A charity softball game between the Westhampton Beach Lady Hurricanes and the Hampton Bays Lady Baymen, to benefit Remsenburg resident Bob Monette, will be held on Saturday, May 9, at Red Creek Park in Hampton Bays. The game begins at 6:30 p.m. and is being held to raise money to buy a specially equipped vehicle for Mr. Monette, who suffers from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The event will include food, beverages, a 50/50 raffle, chances and more. Monetary donations are also being accepted and can be sent to P.O. Box 551, Remsenburg, New York 11960. Electronic donations are also welcome through PayPal and can be sent to friends4captboboptonline.net.
The Westhampton Free Library will show the film “Hotel For Dogs” on Friday, May 8, at noon, as part of its Brown Bag Movies series. The film will be screened at the Westhampton Community Center in Westhampton Beach. Call 288-3335.
