The field is more than 11 times the size of that recorded for the first run in 1997 – it’s almost the equivalent of
the population of the entire city of Bundaberg hitting the pavement. Early this morning, Brisbane’s streets and footpaths were busy with entrants heading to the event and starting from the southern end of the Gateway Bridge towards the RNA. The first of the 10km runners home was Michael Shelley, 25, who also won this year’s City to Surf race in Sydney. He told couriermail.com.au he was pleased with the result – a time of 29 minutes 35 seconds in warm conditions. Mr Shelley said his 10km run was quite different from the 14km City to Surf win earlier in August. So once you get to the top (of the Gateway Bridge) you just go down it and it’s only 8km to go. It’s a lot warmer than what I’ve experienced in the past with the Bridge to Brisbane… But I’m a Queensland boy so I’m used to the heat.
But out to see everyone else enjoying it is such a buzz as well.”
