Sir Bob Geldof will give the introduction to Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s lecture on aid, justice, and charity in &Aacuteras na Mac L&eacuteinn, NUI, Galway, on Sunday at 5pm. Entitled ‘An Audience with Desmond Tutu’, the distinguished Anglican cleric, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and anti-apartheid campaigner, will speak about his life experiences and the global legacy of aid and charity at the event. He will take questions from the audience afterwards. Archbishop Tutu will also receive the Literary and Debating Society’s President’s Medal, the society’s highest accolade. Previous recipients include Noam Chomsky, Bruce Morrison, and Bertie Ahern. Originally from the Transvaal region of South Africa, Desmond Tutu was ordained an Anglican priest in 1961, Bishop of Lesotho in 1976, and by 1986 was South Africa’s highest Anglican official as Archbishop of Cape Town. In 1984 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his anti-apartheid work.
Admission to the talk is &euro5. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to a charity of Archbishop Tutu’s choosing. Tickets are available from the Socs Box (091 – 492852), and Zhivago Records, Shop Street.
