Smoking kills six times more Scots than accidents, homicides, suicides, falls and poisoning combined, campaigners have said.
Anti-smoking group Ash Scotland said the thousands of smokers dying north of the border every year are “the silent victims of a major health epidemic”. Sheila Duffy, chief executive of the charity, said: “If someone is killed in a road accident, murdered, takes their own life or dies as a result of poisoning, its a newsworthy event.
