Proceeds from the event are going to a scholarship fund dedicated to Kieran Shields, an Orange detective killed in the line of duty.
South Orange police officers and firefighters were members of the winning team in a basketball tournament on Saturday to benefit a scholarship fund dedicated to the memory of , an Orange detective killed in the line of duty in 2006. The trophy was presented by Shields’s mother, Brenda, and his widow, Mo, was also present. On the winning team in purple jerseys were South Orange police officers Adrian Acevedo, John Niedzinski and Jarad Adams and firefighters Keith Sheppard and Ricky Defino. Other team members were Maplewood police officer Rhode Jadotte Orange firefighter Ruben Padilla and South Orange PBA supporters Jamal Lovell and Craig Cleve. The first game was at 10 a.m., and the final championship game started around 7 p.m. The other four teams were from the East Orange Police Department, East Orange Fire Department, Orange Police Department and East Orange General Hospital. The teams each paid $350 to play, and money from the entrance fees, food and beverages went to the scholarship fund.
