Sorority Hosts Olympics For Charity 2009: Jason Adams

Sorority hosts Olympics for charity

Jason Adams dove for the ball during blanket volleyball, only to come up empty-handed with grass stains on his knees.
“It was more of a glorious fall,” Adams (sophomore-music education) said. Adams helped represent Sigma Nu fraternity in the first Alpha Delta Pi sorority Olympics held Thursday afternoon. The event raised money for Ronald McDonald House Charities, Alpha Delta Pi’s national philanthropy. Ronald McDonald House Charities provide care and “a home-away-from-home” for the families of critically ill children who are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals across the country, philanthropy chairwoman Kaitlyn Kirby (sophomore-business administration) said. The event was the sorority’s first spring philanthropy event, she said. About 40 students in athletic gear gathered near the gazebo on the HUB Lawn for the games. Some individual events included a dizzy bat home run derby, a leap frog relay and a wheelbarrow race. Despite the early setback, Adams helped his team win the first round of blanket volleyball. Two representatives from each team held a sheet between them and tried to keep the ball from touching the ground as it was tossed back and forth between teams. As an extra challenge, the ball had to be kept within a circle of orange cones.
Sigma Kappa sorority and Theta Delta Chi fraternity served as the other two competing teams and helped to keep everyone guessing who would take home the gold. Each team paid a minimum of $80 to participate in the events.
