Got canned goods building up in your pantry Saturday is the perfect opportunity to put them to good use.
+t +h The National Association of Letter Carriers, along with the Campbell Soup Company and the U.S. Postal Service, will be collecting non-perishable food items for the 15annual “Stamp Out Hunger” campaign. The campaign focuses on eradicating hunger, channeling food to local food banks around the U.S., which this year are in dire need with an average of 35 million Americans hungry or on the brink of hunger according to the hunger relief charity Feeding America. The Stamp Out food drive is the largest single day event of its kind, collecting 73 million pounds of food last year. The process is simple: collect canned food items and other non-perishable goods in a bag and put the bag next to your mailbox. Saturday, your letter carrier will pick up the bags when he or she delivers your mail. All food will then be donated to local food banks. Acceptable items include: canned beans, vegetables, soups, meats and fish, rice, pasta, cereal and juice. Lillia Callum-Penso can be reached at 864-298-3768
