They are back to boldly go where no man has gone before…But this time, Captain James T Kirk, Spock, Bones and Uhura are all
much younger as they return for the new Star Trek film. Chris Pine takes over the commander’s seat on the Starship Enterprise as Captain Kirk, the role made famous by William Shatner. Here, the 28-year-old actor tells The Ticket what it was like to step into such famous shoes. What was it like taking on a character so closely identified with another actor It’s twofold. Firstly, this is a big studio, big budget movie and there’s inherent pressure from a lot of people who’re expecting it to make loads of money. On top of that, it’s Star Trek, and with that comes the avid, protective fan base. Once I’d met the director, JJ Abrams, I got a sense of what he wanted to do with it. He wasn’t looking for a bad impersonation of what Mr Shatner had done, realising that was unique and so specific and iconic. It was very liberating because I knew that, if anything, I had to run in the opposite direction to make any mark of my own on the part.
Have you met William Shatner
