More than 25,000 Liverpool fans flocked to Anfield for the Hillsborough memorial match to give a substantial helping hand to charity.
The chance to view the Liverpool Legends XI came in a week in which the club are about to fail again in their pursuit of the title, with Manchester United again on the brink of another Premier League success. The cause was a good one: Dalglish’s wife Marina’s appeal to raise funds for a new radiotherapy centre at the nearby University Hospital, Aintree. This charity game is a regular event at Anfield, but had greater significance as the game to mark the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. The crowd rose as one midway through the second half to call for justice for the 96 victims of Hillsborough.
The turn-out was impressive as England’s famed SAS attack, Teddy Sheringham and Alan Shearer, joined forces again for the All-Stars, and Sheringham – pantomime villain for the night because of his Old Trafford history – scored with a stunning chip.
