A lack of employment, poverty and a decade-long rebel insurgency driving people
from villages to the capital Kathmandu and other municipalities in search of safety.
Migration and urban growth resulting in a shortage of adequate housing in towns and
cities, crowded living spaces and the growth of sub-standard housing.
According to government data, nearly 430,000 families live in Nepal are living in
sub-standard housing. Substandard housing frequently means structures with thatched
roofs and straw walls, sometimes supported by pillars made of old timber. Water is often unsanitary and few dwellings have toilets or electricity. These dilapidated houses are also a fire risk causing nearly 10,000 families to loose their homes to fire every year.

Team Banaunu’s major fundraiser for this year will be a Masquerade Gala Dinner held at Mirra’s (Bridge st Valley) on Saturday 4th October 2008. Tickets cost $125.00 per person including dinner, entertainment and all your beverages (beer/wine and champagne.) Discounts can be provided for table of 10 bookings. $125 is high however when we put it into context – $125.00 Australian dollars is how much an fortunate Nepal citizen would make in 6 months.

As already stated the gala dinner will be a Masquerade theme. So boys, hire a nice suit black tie), girls dust off your ball gowns and of course bring along your masks! Dinner proceedings will be followed by auctions, entertainers and bands!
