This Week In Golf May 21st Through May 24th 2009: Haas Won

This Week in Golf May 21st through May 24th

Haas won the tournament with a total of seven-over-par 287, which was the highest winning score in tournament history – by five shots.
It was also the second-highest winning 72-hole score for a Champions Tour event. The second round was the easiest of the week as seven of the 12 sub-par rounds were posted in that round. Not one of those 12 players managed another score of par or better. Mark O’Meara fired the low score of the week with his four- under 66 in the second round. Haas led after the first round thanks to his one-under 69, but trailed Langer by a shot heading into the final round. Langer stumbled to a double-bogey on the first hole of the final round and never recovered. Haas’ last-day 74 included five bogeys and a single birdie. For Haas, winning the title at Oak Hill was a little redemption. He lost the clinching singles match at the 1995 Ryder Cup at Oak Hill. The win for Haas was his second in three years at the Senior PGA Championship. His other win at this championship was completely different as he carded three sub-par rounds with a winning score of five-under 279. He bested Brad Bryant on the third extra hole for the 2006 title. Haas was one of five players to break par at Oak Tree and the cut that week was plus-seven. This year’s host course, Canterbury, joins Oak Hill as the only two courses to host all the U.S. men’s rotating championships.
Canterbury hosted the U.S. Open in 1940 and 1946, then hosted the U.S. Amateur in 1964. The PGA Championship was played here in 1973 and the U.S. Senior Open was played at Canterbury in 1996. Dave Stockton, a two-stroke winner at that Senior Open, is in the field this week.
