Valentine Weekend Events To Love Deeply 2009: Romance May

Valentine weekend events to love deeply

ROMANCE MAY take precedence this weekend but there are plenty of other activities going on around the country over the coming days for star-crossed
lovers, singletons and families enjoying the mid-term break. Restaurants are set to do a roaring trade this evening as couples celebrate St Valentine’s day but the night will also see a bevy of stars hitting the town for the sixth annual Irish Film and Television Awards (Ifta), which take place at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin. Those of a romantic nature will be encouraged to further share their love by supporting Irish charity Love Shack (Love for Sick, Homeless and Abandoned Children in Kenya), which will be parking its “love emergency” ambulance on Grafton Street in Dublin. The charity is asking people to consider forgoing the purchase of flowers and chocolates for their loved ones and instead donate the money to help the organisation realise its aim of building a school for destitute children in Nairobi. Love Shack is holding its second official flag day and volunteers will be joined by Glória, Ireland’s lesbian and gay choir, which plans on serenading members of the public with love songs. The Cupid’s Dash, a 10k Valentine’s day charity fun run, takes place at the Phoenix Park from 10am onwards and is designed to get lovers’ pulses running. Elsewhere, Catholic group Youth 2000 is holding a Valentine’s day gathering at Arus Treasa on Coppinger Row, Clarenden Street, in Dublin, to celebrate “true love”. Young people between the ages of 18 and 35 are encouraged to join the get-together and take part in a live Mass in RTÉ studios tomorrow morning.
Among the 900 guests expected to attend the Ifta ceremony tonight are directors Neil Jordan and Jim Sheridan, and actors Brendan Gleeson, Saoirse Ronan and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The event, hosted by Ryan Tubridy, will see veteran documentary maker George Morrison, the pioneering director of Mise Éire , presented with an industry lifetime contribution award by President Mary McAleese.
