One hundred and eighty golfers teed off yesterday at the 12th annual Investors Group Rotary Charity Classic at the Royal Oaks Estates and Golf
Club. The tournament, presented by Moncton West and Riverview Rotary Club, was able to raise over $40,000 for the club’s main charities Moncton Headstart and Moncton Youth Residences. Last year at the tournament, $42,000 was raised. Mike Walsh, president of the Moncton West Riverview club, said participation at the event is maxed out every year, which in turn makes for plenty of funds being raised. “You want to give people as much for their dollar as you possibly can,” said Walsh. “You strive to have a classy tournament that people want to come back to next year, because there is a huge amount of competition out there.” He said the amount of support the tournament gets from the community never ceases to amaze him. There were four hole-in-one prizes up for grabs on the day, including a 2010 Cadillac SRX on hole 6, a Lawsons Signature Dream Kitchen on hole 8, $50,000 tax-free from Cook & Company on hole 12 and a trip for four to the Superbowl on hole 14.
“We try to make this a day that harmonizes fun and fellowship,” said Ty Steeves, co-chairman of the tournament. “We want to keep them in a good mood so that they’ll hit their bank book at the end of the day.”
