The father of Claudia Lawrence has said he finds it “incredible” that no one has come forward with new information since a possible sighting
of his daughter. In response to the recent outbreak of swine flu, the university has set up a Major Incident Response Team. The University of York has been ranked tenth in The Independent’s university guide, up one place from last year. speaks to Derwent vice-chair and event co-ordinator Anna Claire Younger about the upcoming Big D event. “This year I am looking to transform Langwith and Derwent into a trippy, sexy WonDerland – every room and outdoor space has a different theme and we have injected bucketfuls of creativity into the theming and decorations to ensure that people literally feel like they have stepped into another world,” claims Younger, with great emphasis on theme this year. Each room will be themed differently and decorated to the max so people will literally feel like they have stepped into wonderland.” “The actors used in the promotional video will be present at the event providing further entertainment, and students can also look forward to shisha with the caterpillar and a live Mad Hatter’s teaparty amongst other things.” What is different about this year’s event is that Big D has “expanded to offer a sister event: Little D, which will take place during the day,” claims Younger. This event will portray the more innocent side of the wonderland, with croquet on the lawn, a teaparty tent, traditional fete style stalls and society performances from dance soc, cheerleading, a barber shop quartet and more. Nonetheless, the star attraction is without a doubt Colourscape, a contemporary interactive art work.
As for the main event itself, this year’s lineup will feature Simian Mobile Disco, Scratch Perverts and Utah Saints, as well as several campus bands and DJs such as Magnapow, Idioteque, Breakz, DJ Barnaby, and of course the classic Derwent cheese!
