The Winter Springs and Oviedo police departments suited up April 25 in the Cops for Kids House Charity Flag Football Game to benefit the Kids House of Seminole. The event was held at Oviedo High School and included raffles from more than 20 businesses in the area, with proceeds going to the Kids House in Sanford. “We decided on the Kids House as the charity because they’re such a great organization, and we work with them on a daily basis,” Winter Springs Lt. Allison Smith said. The Kids House, a non-profit organization that opened in 2000, allows for all child abuse agencies and victims to come together at one single facility in Seminole County, said Denise Sax, the director of training and events. It offers medical exams, counseling with therapy and family support on site. “We do all our own fundraising and work in collaboration with all seven police departments in Seminole County,” Sax said. “They come into the child-friendly environment and speak with the child and one of our coordinators on case history in a private interview room. Others involved can observe from audio and video devices so the child doesn’t have to tell the same story over and over again.”
“They were very giving and had no problem supporting us once we told them it was for Oviedo and Winter Springs,” said Oviedo Lt. Adam Egert, who spearheaded the event.
