Monday 25 May 2009 The Netherlands &ndash A tipping campaign raised a total of EUR 120,000 for charity over the weekend.
Under the slogan ‘Keep the change, change the world,’ customers at participating bars and restaurants are encouraged to leave generous tips. Proceeds from the Night of the Tip go to development projects, and the event aims to raise public awareness of the need for structural development. Bars and restaurants in nine cities around the country collected EUR 60,000, which was then doubled by development organisation Impulsis. The total was a EUR-10,000 increase on last year’s takings. The money will go to eight small projects in developing countries, such as a sports project in Zimbabwe, an activity camp for underprivileged children in Guatemala and a water project in Senegal. This is the fifth time the Night of the Tip has been held. In all 567 pubs and restaurants took part. The first edition, held in Groningen, raised EUR 8,000.
