700 Queue At MampS In Plymouth For 1p Sale 2009: More 700

700 queue at MampS in Plymouth for 1p sale

MORE than 700 people queued at Marks and Spencer in Plymouth today as the shop sold items for 1p to mark their 125th anniversary.
Another huge queue is expected tomorrow morning, the second day of the three-day event. Store staff are expecting even longer queues as word of the bargains spreads. M&S started as a Penny Bazaar and decided to sell 15 lines of modern goods for just a penny – and also raise cash for St Luke’s Hospice. Today’s sale raised £650 for the Turnchaple-based charity. But the store’s commercial manager, Jane Carey, let The Herald into a secret. “We weren’t really charging people a penny,” she said. “We asked people if they wanted to make a donation.”
The store is aiming to raise £5,000 for St Luke’s between now and September.
