Charlize Theron has been named UN Ambassador of Peace, her role having a special focus on ending violence against women.
The Oscar winning actress joins other UN Messengers of Peace actors George Clooney and Michael Douglas, musicians Daniel Barenboim, Midori Goto and Yo-Yo Ma, authors Paulo Coelho and Elie Wiesel, equestrian Princess Haya Bint al-Hussein and naturalist Jane Goodall.
The appointment is fitting considering her own shocking experience of domestic violence, at the age of 15 Theron lost her mother in a fatal shooting caused by her alcoholic father.
