Covenant House California: A Magical Night Of Hope

Covenant House California 2013 Awards Gala

During their extraordinary 25th Anniversary celebration, Covenant House California (CHC) is set to honor renowned award-winning musician, composer, and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock, along with retiring CHC Executive Director George R. Lozano, at their annual Gala and Awards Dinner taking place on 2nd of May at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. The nights festivities will also include a silent and live auction, actress Vinessa Shaw as emcee and A-list entertainment by the greatest living jazz saxophonist and composer, Wayne Shorter.

During this landmark year, the evening event will celebrate CHCs tireless quest to seek out homeless and at-risk youth living on the streets and offer them hope and the tools they need to turn their lives around. A large number have been thrown out of their homes or run away from severe abuse, while others have aged out of the foster care system with no family, no support and no one to turn to for help.

During my 22 years with Covenant House California, Ive been honored to make a difference by offering care and support to so many homeless and at-risk youth, said CHC Executive Director George R. Lozano. This gala celebrates a remarkable milestone for Covenant House California, and will remind all of us what an important part we play in the future of these youth.

This years honoree, Herbie Hancock, is a true icon of modern music. Throughout his explorations, he has transcended limitations and genres while maintaining his unmistakable voice. With an illustrious career spanning five decades and over 40 notable music awards that include 14 Grammy Awards, he continues to amaze audiences across the globe. There are few artists in the music industry who have had more influence on acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B than Herbie Hancock.

Hancock was recently named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the promotion of Intercultural Dialogue and has joined the University of California, Los Angeles faculty as a professor in the UCLA music department.

George R. Lozano, Executive Director of Covenant House California, will be retiring after 22 years of service to CHC and will be honored at the Awards Gala for his lifetime achievement. His leadership has advanced the Covenant House California to now serve thousands of homeless, at-risk and trafficked youth annually in Los Angeles and Oakland.

Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors Foundation is the Champion Sponsor of the event. Past CHC honorees include James Cameron and his wife Suzy Amis Cameron, Vanessa Williams, Andy Garcia, Keyshawn Johnson, Sharon Osbourne, William Shatner and Charlize Theron.
