Trinity Mirror, the papers’ owners, have said the job cuts are necessary to safeguard the future of the titles. Meanwhile, the First Minister said political parties in Scotland are watching events in the newspaper industry with concern. Alex Salmond also said the Scottish Government stood ready to play a “constructive” role. Mr Salmond made the offer in a speech at a newspaper charity lunch in Glasgow on Friday. He told the event, a fund-raiser for the Journalists’ Charity, that the developments in the industry had been the subject of two debates and questions on Thursday in the Scottish Parliament. “It indicates a real concern across the parties for events and developments in the industry,” said Mr Salmond. “Certainly the government is following these developments closely and seeking to play a constructive role where we can.” He went on: “All of us understand that a strong and creative media in Scotland is absolutely vital for the democratic health of the country.
“Politicians of all parties, at various times looking at all kinds of newspapers in different ways, maybe don’t always feel that way.
