Golf Notes 2009: Bilo Charity

Golf notes

The Bi-Lo Charity Classic, the nation’s largest one-day charity golf tournament celebrating its 25th year in June, is the centerpiece of three days of
golf activities, offering the opportunity to play some of the top courses in South and North Carolina — all for a good cause. The June 6-8 weekend features pre-tournament parties on Saturday and Sunday at Greenville’s Hartness Estate, with golf on Monday at Bright’s Creek Golf Club near Hendersonville, N.C., and Greenville’s Thornblade Club Clinton’s Musgrove Mill, Jack Nicklaus-designed The Reserve at Lake Keowee, The Cliffs at Glassy and The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards, Greenville’s Green Valley Country Club, and Greenville Country Club’s Chanticleer and Riverside courses. Also on the course lineup are Hendersonville’s Tom Fazio-designed Champion Hills and Kenmure Country Club. Tournament charities focus on hunger relief, children and education. Last year included an outing for youngsters in the state’s First Tee programs and Columbia’s Fairway Outreach. A tournament for Greenville and Spartanburg First Tee groups is June 5. Registration for the Bi-Lo Classic weekend is $850/golfer (plus a guest for parties). For information, go to Bi-LoCharityClassic.com, call (864) 286-5895, or e-mail S.C. Seniors. Kingstree’s Bill Smunk rallied from five shots down with a closing 6-under-par 66 to overtake Gary Shimmin and win the S.C. Mid-Amateur titles in 1988 and 1995, finished at 6-under 210 and Shimmin at 212. Columbia’s Steve Pachol tied for sixth (223), and Columbia’s Gus Sylvan and Richard Turner tied for 11th (225).
