Heros Return 2009: Involved Paul

Heros return

Get involved PAUL Gascoigne pulled on a black and white striped shirt &ndash but not the one he’s used to.
The former Newcastle United and England star donned a Darlington kit to take part in a charity match to help save the cash-strapped club. Gazza was the star turn in front of the 3,000 crowd and thrilled them by notching a goal as the side he captained ran out 5-3 winners at the Darlington Arena. The League Two club went into administration in February after running into financial trouble and were docked 10 points by the FA. Alongside Gazza were some fellow North East stars of yesteryear, including Marco Gabbiadini, Craig Hignett and Bernie Slaven. Gazza’s team was playing against Darlington’s most successful side in the club’s recent history, the 1999 play-off final team. The midfielder, who made his last professional appearance in 2004, seemed to have put his much-publicised personal problems behind him.
Looking fit and happy, he played for almost an hour, and scored his team’s second goal.
