The Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corp., Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corp., Quincy Geneva Housing Corp.
and Braintree’s Community Funding Inc. will convene “Metro Boston Foreclosure Intervention” on May 9. Funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and organized by Maryland-based charity HomeFree-USA, the event aims to connect homeowners with foreclosure-prevention counselors. Consumers who bring in loan and foreclosure documents will receive free help negotiating mortgage changes, refinancings or other moves aimed at avoiding home seizures. “We want to get the message out that there’s help available for anyone and everyone who has or is potentially going to have problems with foreclosure,” said Christopher Thompson of Quincy Geneva Housing Corp. Thompson said experts will review each participant’s documents, then devise custom strategies based on “how deeply the person is in financial trouble, whether they’re employed or not – you name it.” The activist said he hopes homeowners who’ve been too embarrassed to admit their woes to others use the event to get advice.
“This isn’t a blame game, it’s a strategy of helping one another,” Thompson said. “We spent a lot of years building our community back up. Letting it fall back into economic crisis isn’t an option.”
