Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakness and degeneration. It primarily affects males, with symptoms typically appearing in early childhood. DMD is caused by a mutation in the gene responsible for producing dystrophin, a protein crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of muscle fibers. As the disease progresses, individuals with DMD experience difficulty in walking, breathing, and performing everyday tasks. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for DMD, but various treatments and therapies can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Ongoing research and advancements in medical science offer hope for potential breakthroughs in the future.
In the pursuit of finding treatments and ultimately a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, numerous organizations and charities dedicate their efforts to support affected individuals and their families. One such notable charity is Only Watch, an international initiative that raises funds through horology auctions to support scientific and medical research focused on neuromuscular diseases, including Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
As part of its ongoing efforts, Only Watch is gearing up for its highly anticipated charity sales auction, showcasing unique timepieces generously donated by renowned luxury watch brands. This upcoming event not only brings together horology enthusiasts but also serves as a powerful platform to raise funds for vital research and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of individuals affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Only Watch was created in 2005 by Luc Pettavino with one intent: raise funds for research on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (a genetic disease that concerns 1 in 3,500 boys and weakens progressively all their muscles and that affected Luc and Monique’s son, Paul) by auctioning one-off timepieces. Since then, thanks to the increasing formidable mobilization of the watch industry and the support of an entire ecosystem, this initiative has become a very awaited biennial rendezvous in the horology calendar for both brands and collectors.
