Get involved A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl will forego her 10th birthday party with friends to raise more than £1,000 in memory of her granfather.
Nicole Ready is prepared to spend the day walking 5km in the Race for Life when she turns 10 on May 31. She is taking on the Cardiff fundraiser in memory of her grandfather, Ralph Blades , who died last year. “She surprised me by saying she would rather do the Race for Life for her grampy than have a party with her friends,” said Maureen, who lost her dad Ralph last March after several illnesses including myeloma, a form of cancer of the white blood cells, and prostate cancer. “Now she’s got her heart set on helping the charity.” Her dad Chris and big brother Daniel, 15, are all very proud of her, as this is the first charity event she has taken on. After the race the whole family will head back to Maureen’s mum, Loleta’s house to sing Happy Birthday and cut the cake.
Maureen, who works at The Women’s Workshop in Butetown, Cardiff, said her mum, 69, has been an inspiration to the whole family.
