(April 23): A handful of local residents converged on the streets of Boston Monday to participate in the 113th annual Boston Marathon, with both the experience and times had by all proving to be memorable. The 26.2-mile course, which stretched from Hopkington Center to Boylston Street, had nearly 23,000 participants from all over the world, including Thomas Hedstrom and C. Douglas Johnstone of Camden Ellen Spring of Thomaston and Cynthia Battel of Union. Hedstrom, 33, had the best overall finishing time of all Midcoast runners, completing the race in two hours, 53 minutes and 11 seconds. He finished 485th in his age division, 613th among men and 648th overall. Hedstrom was timed at 20:02 for the 5K distance (3.1 miles), 40:34 for the 10K, 1:00:52 for the 15K, 1:21:24 for the 20K, 1:25:50 at the midway point, 1:41:50 for the 25K, 2:02:50 for the 30K, 2:23:56 for the 25K, and 2:44:21 for the 40K. Battel, 49, finished the race in 3:44:54. She finished 253rd in her age division, 3,268 among women and 11,641st overall. Battel was timed at 24:55 for the 5K, 49:33 for the 10K, 1:15:10 for the 15K, 1:40:25, 1:45:57 at the midway point, 2:06:22 for the 25K, 2:33:11 for the 30K, 3:01:20 for the 35K and 3:31:19 for the 40K. Johnstone, 60, finished the course in 3:57:2. He finished 248th in his age division, 9,903rd among men and 14,969th overall.
Johnstone was timed at 25:50 for the 5K, 53:22 for the 10K, 1:19:39 for the 15K, 1:46:32 for the 20K, 1:52:20 at the midway point, 2:14:27 for the 25K, 2:44:12 for the 30K, 3:14:44 for the 35K and 3:44:25 for the 40K.
