Hank Haney has gained fame as Tiger Woods’ swing coach, but he figures to have his hands full with one of Woods’ buddies in
a new reality show called “The Haney Project” on the Golf Channel. Haney attempts to revamp Charles Barkley’s awkward swing in an ongoing, seven-part series that premieres at 7 p.m. March 2. “You have to swallow a lot of pride doing something like this show,” Barkley said. “I’m really the only one with anything to lose. But, the fact of it is, I’ve got nothing left to lose.” During the series, Haney and Barkley visit some of the top-rated courses in golf, where they encounter fans and celebrities. For Haney, fixing Barkley’s swing is a Herculean task. “Charles’ swing is so recognizable, but for all the wrong reasons,” Haney said. “He’s a great athlete and extremely dedicated to working hard to get better. But I’ve taught more than 50,000 golf lessons, and this will be the biggest project.” Golf Fore Africa, co-founded by LPGA Tour Hall of Famer Betsy King, will conduct its second annual benefit March 23 at Desert Highlands Golf Club in Scottsdale. Others participating in the event include LPGA players Helen Alfredsson, Angela Stanford, Morgan Pressel, Nicole Castrale and Katherine Hull. Former tour player Kay Cockerill of the Golf Channel will be guest commentator.
The charity raises money for children who have been orphaned or made vulnerable by AIDS and poverty. Cost to attend is $500 per person, and the event is limited to 100 participants. Information: golfforeafrica.org or 480-284-5818.
