Saugatuck had its winning golf ways snapped at the Lawton Blue Devil Invitational Saturday.
The Indians finished third at the loaded Lawton Invite with a 329 score. Kalamazoo Hackett took the top spot at 299. White Pigeon was second at 320. Leading the Indians and medaling in the event were Colins Hutchins (76) and David Wobith (77). Mike Piggins and Zach Lefler each shot 88s. Saugatuck’s accumulated record for 18 invitationals is 29-10. Baseball West Ottawa wins tournament: The Panthers edged the host Chix for the invite’s top spot, 4-3. Collin Van Dyke was the winning pitcher for the Panthers. Ryan Abel tripled and singled for West Ottawa. Collecting a game-high three hits was the Panthers’ Ted Neumann. T.J. South homered for the Chix. Zach Harbison laced three hits and South tripled and singled in the Panthers first game 10-0 win over Fennville. Lacrosse Boys Grand Rapids Catholic 8, Holland 7: The Warriors dropped a close Make a Wish charity game. Jake Seiler had two games and an assist for Holland. Softball West Ottawa drops pair: The Panthers dropped a pair of home tournament games to Hastings, 6-3, and to Shelby, 4-2. Amy VanderStoep tossed a one-hitter, while striking out seven and walking three in one of West Ottawa’s games. Holland Christian 10, Muskegon Catholic Central 5: The Maroons won their first game of the season after 20 tries. Darcy Elzinga was the winning pitcher striking out five and walking five. Elzinga allowed six hits. The Maroons collected 12 hits. Leading the way was Nicole Michmerhizen with a single and triple for five runs batted in. Chelsea Konyndyk knocked in four runs with three hits. Collecting two hits apiece for Holland Christian were Laura Hop and Melissa Bosma. Track The Saugatuck placed third out of 17 teams at Division 4 regional: The Indians, who qualified one relay and four individual events scored 81 points. Senior John Gibbons cleared 6-0 to win the high jump and to punch his ticket to the state finals. The 3,200 meter relay team (James Broe, Christain Birky, Tyler Slentz, and Ethan Lievense) also qualified as they easily won in a time of 8:30.58. Senior Tyler Slentz ran away from the field in the 1,600 meter to win in a time of 4:35.10. Junior Ethan Lievense placed third in the 800 meter run and qualified for the state championship with a time of 2:02.51. Senior Christian Birky picked up his third regional championship in three years in the 3,200 meter run in a time of 9:52.87. Two other Indians qualifed in the 3,200 meter run — Slents second (10:03.18) and Ethan Lievense fifth (10:21.64).
Water polo West Ottawa drops pair: The 19-6 Panthers lost a pair of regional games to Rockford, 11-10, and to East Grand Rapids, 9-5. West Ottawa had already clinched a berth in the state tournament with a victory on Friday. The dual losses dropped the Panthers to 19-6 for the season. Named all-regional from West Ottawa was Amanda Teske. Named to the second team were Elyse DeShaw and Sam Andrews. Laureen Meaney was an honorable mention choice.
