Record number of fun runners in Knowle charity event

Get involved A RECORD number of fun runners dusted off their trainers to raise thousands of pounds for charity in this year’s Knowle fun
run. A total of 2,300 runners turned the streets of the town into a sea of colour as many donned fancy dress outfits and hundreds more put on their finest running gear. Charities that benefited from the five-mile run, which was organised by Knowle and Dorridge Lions, were Macmillan Cancer Support, Whizz-Kidz and the Lions Campaign Sightfirst II. More than &pound35,000 was raised although organisers say a final, accurate figure will not be available until September. The overall winner was Simon Lees who finished the course in 28 minutes and 27 seconds. The first female to cross the line was Amanda Olearly who completed the run in 33 minutes and 35 seconds. The Walter Smith’s Team trophy went to Solihull and Small Heath Athletics Club.
Television presenter Don Maclean, who has hosted Songs of Praise in the past, got the race under way as hundreds of runners jostled for position at the start line.
