Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare genetic disorder that primarily affects young boys. It is caused by mutations in the gene that produces dystrophin, a protein that helps protect and strengthen muscle fibers. As a result, children with DMD experience progressive muscle weakness and degeneration, leading to difficulty with walking, standing, and other activities of daily living. The disease can also affect the heart and lungs, leading to potentially life-threatening complications. While there is currently no cure for DMD, advancements in research and treatment have led to improved outcomes and quality of life for those living with the disease.
Many organizations around the world are dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support those affected by DMD. One such organization is Action Duchenne, a UK-based charity that is committed to improving the lives of those with DMD through research, advocacy, and support services.
As part of their fundraising efforts, Action Duchenne hosts a variety of events throughout the year to raise awareness and funds for their cause. One of their upcoming events is Swim Serpentine, a charity swim in London’s Hyde Park that draws participants from around the world.
Swim Serpentine is a one-day open water swimming festival staged in the heart of London. A must-do event in the open water swimming calendar. The festival is held in and around the beautiful Serpentine in Hyde Park, the venue for the open water swimming competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
*The event is wet suit optional!*
The Swim Serpentine team works to support participants with a range of disabilities to ensure they offer a safe, inclusive environment for swimmers of all abilities. If you need assistance to feel safe and confident at the event, they put in place a number of measures to help, including:
*ramped entrance into and exit out of the Serpentine
*assistance with entering and exiting the water
