THOUSANDS of runners battled the heat as they pounded the city’s pavements in the Plymouth Half Marathon today.
Spectators basked in the glorious sunshine as they cheered on their friends and family in the popular event. Around 4,000 people from elite athletes to someone in a penguin suit, took part in the 13.1-mile race which started and finished on the Hoe. Race director, Nigel Rowe said: “It certainly tested us with the hot weather this year. At some point there were runners who didn’t have enough water but we had back-up vehicles to get to them as quickly as we could.” Organisers believe that around £200,000 will be raised for charity from the annual event.
