Tour draws 10000plus bicyclists

Terria Smith • The Desert Sun • February 15, 2009 Thousands of cyclists took to Coachella Valley roadways Saturday as part of the Tour
de Palm Springs charity bike ride. Professional and recreational cyclists rode alone, in teams or with family. Some participated for their health, others to enjoy the day’s sunny, clear weather — all, though, in support of various causes and charities. The event attracted more than 10,000 bicyclists, who could choose from five paths across the valley that ranged in distance from 5 to 100 miles. The event was expected to raise more than $200,000, officials said. A team of 20 riders from Long Beach signed up to raise awareness for Copaxone, a medication that treats multiple sclerosis.
Melissa Friedman, who has multiple sclerosis, was among them.
