You might want to yell “fore” or simply walk, woof and wag for a good cause.
The Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) is planning two charity events in the next two weeks. On May 30, the Friends for Life walkathon happens at Nicholls Oval, 725 Armour Rd. Registration is slated for 11 a. m. with the walk taking place from noon to 4 p. m. The rain or shine event encourages owners to bring their pets along on the walk while raising money for the shelter’s four-legged friends. But you don’t have to bring a pet to participate. “You can also walk in memory of a pet,” says PHS spokesperson Tracy Dovey. PHS held walk-a-thons several years ago, but the new version will align the walk with others held by other animal shelters under the Ontario SPCA banner. “We couldn’t get the same day, but our head office is encouraging all affiliates and branches to host a Friends for Life walk,” said Dovey. PHS started planning the walk in February. About 10 people, both volunteers and staff, help make the day a success. Dovey hopes this year’s walk brings in $2,500 and that it will grow in future years. “We’re building something here,” she said.
There is no minimum pledge amount, but there’s a nifty prize up for grabs. For every $25 in pledges, your name gets entered in a draw for a trip for two to Disney World. And that’s not all. At the end of the event organizers will award prizes for “top dogs,” the three participants with the most pledges. There are also prizes and giveaways throughout the day.
