Young Farmers 150mile Challenge 2009: Thirty Young

Young farmers 150mile challenge

Thirty young farmers are raising money for charity by cycling and canoeing 150 miles (241.3km) along the River Severn.
The eight-day challenge starts at the source of the Severn near Llanidloes in Powys and ends in the Gloucestershire town of Tewkesbury. The first section of the charity event sees Montgomeryshire Young Farmers’ Club cycling to Garthmyl, near Newtown. They will paddle the rest of the way, stopping to camp in the evenings. Money raised will go to Wales Air Ambulance. The young farmers’ club (YFC) chairman in Montgomeryshire Roland Davies came up with the idea. He said: “Living in rural areas we realise how valuable a resource the air ambulance is and we wanted to raise money to help the service. “We were also looking at ways of raising money and promoting the YFC in a different light and I thought canoeing down the River Severn would be a good idea.
“I’m from Llanidloes and it is the first town on the Severn and as a child it was something I always thought I’d like to do.”
