Accessibility links Rowland Brown, 67, was taking part in a log winching event when a two-and-a half tonne log rolled onto him, shattering his
left leg in four places. Onlookers dialled 999 and the Essex Air Ambulance – which the grandfather-of-four was raising money for – was scrambled to the scene. He was then flown 16 miles to Colchester General Hospital where he underwent surgery to insert a titanium rod in his shin. Mr Brown, a father-of-two, was discharged after five days and is now recovering at home in Danbury, Essex, nursed by wife Jenny, 62. The rescue operation is understood to have cost at least £2,000, double the amount he had hoped to raise. Mr Brown admitted the irony of the mishap was not lost on him or the helicopter crew.
“I’m more than a little embarrassed about the whole event. Friends and family are giving me a ribbing,” he said.
