Education a lifelong pursuit for Peninsula woman: Kathleen Miskel Barber, training director since 2002 at the San Mateo Joint Apprenticeship and Training Center in San Carlos, graduated recently from the University of San Francisco with a master’s degree in leadership and organization. Taking an aggressive class schedule and working full-time, she earned her master’s in 20 months. A native San Franciscan, Barber first went to work as an escrow secretary for First American Title and then Founder’s Title, both in Half Moon Bay, where she met Bob, her husband of 32 years, in a coffee shop. When an apprenticeship opened up in the Local 617, Barber’s husband encouraged her to apply. She did and waited two years for a reply. In the meantime, she became an escrow manager.
The day Barber finally got a call from the union, she resigned after eight years in escrow and became the fifth woman to sign up for the Local 617’s apprenticeship program.
