LIKE FATHER, LIKE DAUGHTER After watching her father, Bill, compete in the annual Duryea Hillclimb when she was younger, Joanna Shields, 27, decided to
get behind the wheel of her father’s sports car to participate in Reading, Pa., racing event. For the first time in the event’s history, a father and daughter both raced the 2.3-mile course, hugging the curves and bombing down the straights in the 59th annual Duryea Hillclimb. Joanna, a Taunton resident, went to a three-day racing school in May. Sunday was her third race. Nearly 100 in several classes drove up Mount Penn from 13th Street to the fire tower. Each drove the course alone in a race against the clock. Bill placed third out of 15 racers in the Historic 1 class with a time of 133.217 seconds. Joanna finished 11th in the same class at 148.450 seconds. Both drove Bill’s 1964 MGB. … HAVING A HEART Brockton 8-year-old William Houston Jr. was playing in his Tremont Street neighborhood when he heard two newborn kittens crying, his grandmother, Mattie DeLoach of Brockton, said Sunday. “These two little animals, they can’t even see,†DeLoach said. “He just brought them inside, to feed them, try to keep them warm.†The mother cat could not be found, she said. The Brockton boy went out to get a bottle to feed the kittens, still attached to the umbilical cord, said DeLoach, who praised her grandson’s humane efforts. “This is a great incentive for others to not abandon these animals,†she said … lending a helpinG HAND 100 YEARS AGO A two-day baby carnival was set for Highland Park. The event included a baby show and young girls’ white dress parade.
